Master Linux Permissions

In Unix-like operating systems (Linux, macOS), file permissions determine who can read, write, or execute a file. The chmod command is used to change these permissions. This calculator helps you generate the correct command code visually.

  • Read (4): Permission to read the file content.
  • Write (2): Permission to modify the file.
  • Execute (1): Permission to run the file as a program.

Who are the Users?

Permissions are defined for three groups:
Owner (User): The user who owns the file.
Group: Users who are members of the file's group.
Public (Others): Everyone else.
