How VAT Is Calculated

Adding VAT

Gross = net × (1 + rate / 100). At 20%, 100 becomes 100 × 1.20 = 120, of which 20 is VAT.

Removing VAT

Net = gross / (1 + rate / 100). At 20%, 120 becomes 120 / 1.20 = 100. A common mistake is to subtract 20% of the gross amount (120 − 24 = 96), which gives the wrong net. The VAT amount is simply gross − net. The same formulas work for any sales tax or GST expressed as a percentage.
