Clean URLs from Any Title

A slug is the readable part of a URL, like merge-pdf-files in example.com/blog/merge-pdf-files. Good slugs are short, lowercase and free of spaces and special characters. Paste one title or a whole list, one per line, and the Slug Generator turns each line into a slug you can copy individually or all at once.

  • Bulk mode: One slug per input line, with a copy button for each and Copy all.
  • Separator: Hyphen (-) or underscore (_).
  • Max length: Cuts at the last whole word instead of in the middle of one.
  • Stop words: Optionally drop short words like "the", "and" or "of" for English, Turkish, German, Spanish, French or Portuguese.

Why use this tool?

Correct Transliteration

Many slug tools simply delete letters they do not know, turning "Größe" into "gre". This one converts them: Turkish ş, ı, ğ, ç, ö, ü and İ become s, i, g, c, o, u and i; with German rules ä, ö, ü and ß become ae, oe, ue and ss; Spanish and French accents are removed and ñ becomes n. "İstanbul'da Güzel Bir Gün" becomes istanbulda-guzel-bir-gun.

Private and Instant

Slugs update as you type and everything runs in your browser, so unpublished titles stay on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Hyphen or underscore: which is better for SEO?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while words joined by underscores can be read as one word. Use underscores only when a system requires them.

Q. How long should a slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance, usually three to six words. Set a max length and the tool cuts at the last whole word so no word is chopped in half.

Q. What does the language setting change?

It picks the stop word list. With German rules, ä, ö and ü are also written as ae, oe and ue; with the other languages the dots are simply removed.

Q. What happens to apostrophes and symbols?

Apostrophes are removed so the word stays together (İstanbul'da becomes istanbulda). With French rules they separate words instead, so l'été becomes l-ete. Other symbols such as &, ?, ! or € are treated as separators.
